I was never much of a plain popcorn fan. I always thought it was such a waste of chewing effort to eat something so flavorless. Shocking, I know, since most people (including my husband) could live on the stuff. This all changed when he introduced me to brewer’s yeast (aka nutritional yeast).
Always late to the game, I didn’t know that this was already a popular popcorn topper for many. Brewer’s yeast is savory, nutty, almost cheesy–a flavor combination that is always welcome to my taste buds. Best of all, it’s good for you. Filled with B-complex vitamins, as well as being a complete protein, brewer’s yeast is also low in fat and sodium. Can’t go wrong with that.
Now I can’t really attest to the flavor of other brands of brewer’s yeast. The Lewis Labs brand is all I’ve ever used based on positive reviews I read years ago. It’s available online or at your local health food store. Over the years, I’ve taken to adding a little paprika and granulated garlic to the yeast just to heighten the popcorn experience even more. These days, I always smuggle in a spice shaker filled with this mix so I can enjoy popcorn at the movies with my husband. Of course, everyone has a favorite way of preparing popcorn so I don’t need to describe ours here. But here’s our take on this delicous topper. There’s really no recipe for this so adjust the proportions according to your taste.
