Baked Brie in Puff Pastry with Fig-Orange Jam
Warm, melty brie wrapped in flaky puff pastry is a classic holiday appetizer that’s easy to put together but your friends and family will think you slaved over it.
(Note: A video of this recipe is posted on my Instagram page. )

My husband and I have just returned from a visit to the US Virgin Islands. We were guests of friends who shared their beautiful home with us on St. John for a week. The time passed too quickly–it’s very easy to get used to days spent swimming, snorkeling, sightseeing and cocktails at sunset. And the beaches…I’ve seen many beautiful beaches over the years but the handful that we visited on the island easily ranked among the best of them. Now, three days home, suffering from mild jet lag, it’s a mad scramble to get Thanksgiving-ready.
So far, I’ve checked one item off my list, this warm appetizer, an old favorite that’s been due for a reappearance on my holiday table. Baked Brie in Puff Pastry or Brie en Croute or simply melty cheese wrapped in flaky pastry, it doesn’t get more old school than this but its wow factor makes it a consistent hit at parties.
Though I love cranberries, this year I opted for my favorite fig-orange jam to spread over the wheel of brie. And rather than just wrapping the pastry sheet over the cheese, I thought a lattice design would be more fun (but it’s completely optional). Serve with candied pecans, crackers, sliced baguette or fruit–you can’t go wrong. The more important question is–do you eat the rind or pick it out? I’m a rind girl myself but I won’t hold it against you if you’re not.

Baked Brie in Puff Pastry with Fig-Orange Jam
Warm, melty brie wrapped in flaky puff pastry is a classic holiday appetizer that's easy to put together but your friends and family will think you slaved over it.
Ingredients
- 1 8oz wheel brie (triple cream brie is best)
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 2-3 tablespoons fig-orange jam (or any jam you like)
- 1 egg, beaten lightly for egg wash
- turbinado sugar for topping (optional)
- candied pecans for topping (optional)
- crackers or sliced bread for serving
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 400ºF. Line a sheet pan or pie pan or cast iron pan with parchment paper and set aside.
-
Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to get an extra half inch to one inch in length and width. Slice it in two pieces widthwise. The half sheet should be enough to wrap around the eight-ounce wheel of brie with a little stretching (it doesn't have to be pretty). Place the brie on top of the half sheet of pastry and spread the jam over the top of the cheese (I don't remove the rind). Pull the ends of the pastry sheet over the top of the wheel of cheese, brushing with the egg wash to bind. It's okay if there are slight gaps in the puff pastry.
-
Slice the other half sheet of puff pastry into ten or eleven strips, widthwise. Weave the strips into a lattice. You can do this two ways: 1) By weaving directly on top of the wrapped brie or by weaving the lattice on the counter and using a spatula to transfer to the top of the wrapped brie. Trim the ends and tuck along the sides of the brie wheel, using the egg wash to bind. Brush the entire surface, top and sides, of the puff pastry. (Note: arrange the lattice close together, avoiding gaps between strips if possible.)
-
Sprinkle with turbinado sugar if using.
-
Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden and bubbling. Cool for a few minutes before serving with crackers, sliced baguette and/or sliced apples or pears. Top with candied pecans if you wish.
The recipe calls for orange-fig jam but the directions do not say what to do with it.
Oops, so sorry about that. Just fixed the recipe. The jam is spread over the top of the wheel of brie before it’s wrapped in the puff pastry. Thanks for the heads up!
Also, if you have an instagram account I’ve just shared a recipe video showing how to make this. Hope it helps. 🙂
I can’t forego cranberries at the holidays, what what a beautiful substitute for a baked brie. And I love your crust!!!
I’m in the minority in my family but I love cranberries, too. Would be even better in this recipe. 🙂
there is something so delicious about a baked brie or camembert isn’t there? and i don’t even like cheese :=) but i will eat a bit of a baked one.
Funny you say this. One of my sisters isn’t a fan of cheese either but after seeing this post she now expects it at Christmas!
